Stillwater Board of Education to consider road improvements

STILLWATER, Okla. — Contracts for road improvements in the amount of $1.3 million near the construction of the new Highland Park Elementary School could be awarded Tuesday when the Stillwater Board of Education meets for its monthly meeting.

The regular board meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Administration Building, 314 S. Lewis. An executive session will convene after the regular board meeting.

The Stillwater district recently received a $220,000 Safe Routes to School Grant that includes $200,000 for infrastructure and $20,000 for noninfrastructure materials such as crossing guard uniforms, bicycles for teaching bike safety, walkie talkies for crossing guards and other safety curriculum. The infrastructure grant money is for traffic lights, signage and road strippage.

Two contracts are being awarded from the grant. Approximately $110,000 is earmarked for a traffic signal at Drury Road and 6th Avenue and $54,000 for a retaining wall on the south side of 6th Avenue so that a sidewalk can be built there.

The board will discuss, consider and possibly vote to award road improvement contracts for concrete pavement, traffic signals, retaining wall, hand rails, storm drainage and sidewalks.

Funding for the road improvement project comes from the federal grant and the $61.5 million bond issue of 2011.

In other action, the board is expected to:

• Continue its evaluation of the contract of Superintendent Ann Caine.

• Consider and possibly vote on an increase in student lunches and a reduction of the cost of student breakfasts.

• Hear presentations from the architect and construction manager on the progress of construction at the new schools for Highland Park and Will Rogers Elementary School.

• Hear an update from Stillwater High School on its Stillwater Make A Change fundraising event.
