Stillwater United Way launches campaign by helping its agencies

The Stillwater Area United Way kicked off its 2009 campaign with the annual Day of Caring on Thursday when more than 300 volunteers completed 69 projects benefiting 24 agencies.

“If we paid a full-time employee to do this work, it would total about eight months salary. It’s a huge increase in efficiency for these agencies,” said Kyle Gibbs, Stillwater United Way board president.

The United Way’s 2009 campaign goal is $800,000, and so far more than $80,000 has been raised.

Volunteers worked anywhere from a couple hours to all day on their projects.

“These agencies aern’t going to have time to do this. They’re busy taking care of our people,” said volunteer Liz Michael.

Projects included cleaning gutters at the Girl Scout lodge, installing a closet door at Payne County Youth Services, repairing a shed roof at Stillwater Domestic Violence Services, painting the gym at the YMCA of Stillwater and delivering meals to Stillwater residents.

“If we can do these types of projects for them, then they don’t have to. It takes a burden off the agencies and they can concentrate on spending their money in other ways,” said Stillwater Area United Way board member Pam Teel.

All the materials needed for these projects, T-shirts and meals for the volunteers were donated by area businesses.

“If you’d like to do community service and don’t have time, this is a day you can participate,” said volunteer Lisa Lawson.

Those interested in donating to the United Way can use a secure online donation service available at www.stillwaterunitedway.org or mail or drop off donations at 109 E. Ninth Ave.
