Judge sets May 10 prelim for former OSU student charged with sexual battery

STILLWATER, Okla. — Judge Katherine Thomas set a May 10 preliminary hearing Monday for former Oklahoma State University student Nathan Cochran who is accused of four counts of sexual battery.

Cochran, 22, has pleaded not guilty. Three men have accused him of sexually assaulting them, court records show. He is free on $100,000 bail.

Oklahoma State University’s Office of Student Misconduct and Administration suspended Cochran from school for three years after finding him responsible for four incidents of sexual misconduct. The incidents happened between Nov. 3 and Aug. 5, 2011.

Stillwater police launched its own investigation into sexual assault allegations after the university’s student newspaper told police about an anonymous email it had received.

Cochran’s attorney John Coyle has said his client did not sexually assault anyone.

Last month, OSU received the Black Hole award from the Society of Professional Journalists for its handling of sexual misconduct complaints against Cochran. Those incidents were not immediately reported to police.

The award is presented annually to the group the organization deems has committed the most egregious violation of the public’s right to know.
