Payne County Commissioners approve purchase of crane

STILLWATER, Okla. — Payne County Commissioners approved a resolution to buy a crane for District 1’s road district Tuesday.

The money comes from the 53 percent of county sales tax designated for capital improvements and maintenance on county roads, according to the resolution.

District 1 County Commissioner Zach Cavett said the county has a crane which it is using to build a bridge east of State Highway 18 South, but it is a 1970s model and is unsafe to use.

Cavett said he wants to buy another used crane, one that is 10 years newer and in better condition.

The crane would probably cost approximately $60,000, he said. Renting a crane would cost approximately $600 per hour, Cavett said.

The county would have to use the bidding process, Cavett said, to purchase a crane. Bid proposals have been mailed to Oklahoma City and Tulsa dealers, as well as companies in Florida and Texas.

The bid opening will be at a later commissioner meeting, but is likely to be Feb. 4, Cavett said.

“I love the high energy stuff,” he said. “Even though it’s country, being able to rock it up, distorted guitars and just seeing the crowd, feeding off of that.”
