Stillwater pre-K lottery applications due March 15

STILLWATER, Okla. — Stillwater Public Schools has begun a new registration lottery for pre-kindergarten instruction.

The lottery — available online and by paper enrollment — is intended to be more equitable to parents who wish to enroll their child in the early childhood program. It is also intended to speed up the system and give timely notification to parents that their child has a spot in the program.

“It used to be late July or even early August before parents would know if and when their child was accepted into the program,” said Westwood Elementary School Principal Jill Metzger. “This will speed up the process, and you will likely know before school is out where your child will be. And this is the fairest method in filling these openings. Not all parents can get off work to go stand in line to enroll (their child).”

Stillwater families who have a child who will be 4 years old on or before Sept. 1 are eligible to register for the free, half-day or full-day pre-K program. Each year, the district asks parents to pre-enroll pre-K students to forecast staffing and classroom needs. Pre-K classes are limited by state law to 20 students. Each of Stillwater’s six elementary schools will have at least three pre-K classes.

Lottery applications can be found at www.stillwaterschools.com beginning Feb. 25. Applications also are available at Westwood Elementary School. Applications are due by noon March 15. Parents will be notified by April 5 of the application status of the first drawing. The names of 60 students will be drawn in the first round of the lottery.

Out of district families may apply but will not be placed until August and only if space is available.

Parents have until April 25 to come to Westwood to complete an enrollment packet. Parents must provide a state-issued birth certificate, immunization records and two proofs of residence. The proof of residence can only be a mortgage deed, lease or current utility bill. Incomplete packets will not be accepted.

The second round of the lottery will be held May 31. The final round will be Aug. 2.

“I love the high energy stuff,” he said. “Even though it’s country, being able to rock it up, distorted guitars and just seeing the crowd, feeding off of that.”
