Stillwater Board of Education will review state report cards Tuesday

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Stillwater Board of Education will receive comprehensive data from the A-F School Report Cards when it meets Tuesday at the Administration Building, 314 S. Lewis.

A special board meeting will be held at 5 p.m., with the regular board meeting to follow at 6:30 p.m.

Stillwater schools received two A’s and seven B’s when the Oklahoma Board of Education released the report cards Oct. 25. Sangre Ridge Elementary School and Stillwater Middle School each earned A’s. Each of Stillwater’s other schools scored no lower than a B.

The state-issued school grade report was based on student achievement, student growth on test scores and whole school improvement, which measured attendance, dropout rates and the number of students in advanced courses.

The new school evaluation initiative was not popular with many school superintendents, many who believed that, among other things, assigning 20 percent of a school’s grade on student growth on test scores was too extreme.

State Superintendent Janet Barresi admitted that the new evaluation program is not a perfect system, but said that she will continue to work with school officials to fine tune the evaluation criteria.

The board also is expected to take action on the 2013-14 school calendar and discuss the criteria for redistricting plans.

The board will consider the out-of-state travel request for the Stillwater High School baseball team’s spring break trip to Peoria, Ariz. Other travel requests are the high school pom team’s trip to Orlando, Fla., Feb. 1-4 and the cheer team’s trip to San Antonio Feb. 8-10.

The board also is expected to vote on a guaranteed maximum price, proposed by Lambert Construction Co., for the construction of the elementary schools at Highland Park and Will Rogers.
