STILLWATER, Okla. —
The former Payne County Jail Annex at the intersection of West Ninth Avenue and Duncan Street will be torn down, Stillwater Mayor John Bartley said.
Payne County commissioners gave the building and land to the city last week.
The agreement calls for the county to receive some of the money from the sale of the Quonset hut-style building and its furnishings.
“Sell it, remove it. That I know is the plan for the that,” Bartley said. “The plan is to remove it for a blank slate.”
The building to the east of it, known as the old Winnelson building, or the mural building, also will be razed.
The city now owns the block between West Eighth and Ninth Avenues and Husband and Duncan Streets.
It doesn’t have any specific plans for the block, the mayor said.
“There have been concepts and ideas for that area for years,” Bartley said.
In 2004 and 2005, the city contracted with Progressive Urban Management Associates of Denver developed a plan, Bartley said. The PUMA plan turned the block into a park with a permanent location for Stillwater’s Farmers Market.
City crews were expected to start demolition of the Winnelson building on Friday. Crews will close the alleys east and south of the building. The west row of parking spaces in the city lot east of the building will be blocked off, Stillwater spokeswoman Sherry Fletcher said.
