Stillwater firefighters train for marathon in Oklahoma City

STILLWATER, Okla. — Local firefighters are gearing up to take part in the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon.

“Right now, we’ve got 13 guys from the department that are either committed to doing either a relay, the half marathon or the full marathon,” Lt. Chad Hane said.

The firefighters have been taking part in training programs with lengths of 16 weeks for the full marathon, 12 weeks for the half marathon and eight to 10 weeks for the relay, he said. Many have turned to the Internet for exercise programs as they prepare.

Hane said this is his fourth or fifth year to prepare for the event. He said a former firefighter took part in triathlons and motivated him to start running in events. Every year, the marathon garners more of the staff.

“This year it was kind of thrown out there to get as many guys as we could to do it,” Hane said.

This year’s participation is the highest the Stillwater Fire Department has seen, Hane said.

He said many of the firefighters traveled to Oklahoma City to assist in rescue the day of the Oklahoma City bombing at the Murrah Federal Building in April 1995.

“We’ve got that part of it and then we’ve also got (those participating) for fitness, to get in better shape or to maintain our current fitness level,” he said.

The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon is not the only run in which the group takes part.

They also signed up for the Remember the 10 run and the Thin Blue Line run for fallen police officers.

“It’s just a lot of fun,” Hane said.
