Oklahoma State University golf teams will take part in Putts for Pets

STILLWATER, Okla. — A rare opportunity to play a round and meet with members of the men and women’s Oklahoma State University golf team for a good cause returns Saturday.

The fourth-annual Putts for Pets event tees off 9 a.m. Saturday at The Stillwater Country Club. Registration is at 8 a.m. The event serves to financially assist the Stillwater Humane Society.

“Putts for Pets is our biggest fundraiser,” said director Jackie Ross-Guerrero. “It determines how many animals we can rescue throughout the year.”

Last’s year event was rained out and Ross-Guerrero hopes this year will bring good weather.

“It’s been extremely successful, especially the silent auction,” she said.

The silent auction, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., will feature items including a house in Hilton Head for a week’s stay, a signed OSU football and assorted gift cards.

“We’re hoping for 20 teams and the more people we have to come for the silent auction, the better,” she said.

Many of the humane society’s dogs will also be on hand for possible adoption.

“We’re real excited,” Ross-Guerrero said. “The new golf coaches — the men’s and the women’s — have been very supportive. It’s what makes our golf tournament unique. There are a lot of golf tournaments locally but we’re the only one that has the men’s and women’s OSU golf team out there.”

OSU Men’s Golf Coach Alan Bratton said the tradition of the partnership will continue.

“That meant a lot to Mike and Pam (McGraw) and I think our guys and girls have enjoyed doing the event,” Bratton said. “They’re all animal lovers as well. It’s a good cause and we’re glad to help.”

Bratton said Stillwater does a great job of supporting the golf teams and that makes this an easy opportunity to give back. All funds toward the Humane Society are raised locally. The group does not receive federal or state funding. Participation costs are $100 a player or $400 a team, which includes breakfast, lunch, beverages and a golf cart.

“Hopefully, lots of people sign up to play and keep making this thing grow and be a bigger success every year,” Bratton said.
