Local law enforcement officials offer Halloween safety tips

STILLWATER, Okla. — Law enforcement officials in Payne County hope thrills stay in costumes and candy this Halloween, not in accidents.

“Don’t let kids trick-or-treat alone, only in groups or supervised by an adult,” Stillwater Police spokesman Capt. Randy Dickerson said. “Several sponsored safe spot areas are hosting events this year.”

If no sidewalk is available, trick-or-treaters should walk at the far edge of the roadway facing traffic, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

“Kids need to be very aware of traffic while involved in trick or treating and should make sure they are as visible as possible,” Dickerson said. “Motorists should watch for kids running across streets.”

The pediatrics groups suggests to not assume the child has the right-of-way because motorists may have trouble seeing them.

For trick-or-treaters with pets, the animal is best restrained, as to not inadvertently jump or bite someone else.

“Be careful and watch out for kids and other kids,” Perkins Police Chief Bob Ernst said. Streets in Perkins become congested with traffic. When out late trick-or-treating, children and their escorts should carry a flashlight for added safety.

For costumes with wigs and other accessories, look for and purchase those with labels stating they are flame resistant.

Stillwater Fire Marshal Trent Hawkins said to look for tips on the National Fire Protection Association website.
