President gives ASCO, Stillwater props in speech

STILLWATER, Okla. — President Barack Obama mentioned Stillwater during a speech Thursday at the SelectUSA Investment Summit in Washington, D.C.

Stillwater got its 15 seconds of fame about 6:12 seconds into the president’s 15-minute speech which promoted America’s business climate.

The president encouraged international companies to invest in the United States.

“... I want companies around the world to know that I believe there is no better place in the world to do business than the United States of America,” he said.

The president mentioned several international companies that were expanding operations or coming to the U.S. for the first time.

Austrian-based Voestalpine is creating 220 jobs at an auto-parts plant in Cartersville, Ga. Canada-based Bombardier is investing more than $600 million to expand its Learjet facility in Wichita, Kan., Obama said.

Stillwater was next.

“ASCO, a Belgian company that makes high-tech aircraft parts, reopened a shuttered factory in Stillwater, Okla., and they’re expected to create 380 good jobs by the end of 2015,” the president said.

ASCO Industries picked Stillwater as the site for its first North American manufacturing plant in July 2012. The company is renovating the former MerCruiser plant on U.S. Highway 177 for its ASCO Aerospace USA facility.

When it is fully operational, the facility is expected to employ approximately 600 people. Meridian Technology Center is partnering with ASCO to help train employees.
