STILLWATER, Okla. —
A 26-year-old Stillwater man faces a first-degree murder charge in Saturday’s beating of Jeremy Don Sutherland, 32, of Stillwater. Sutherland died Wednesday in an Oklahoma City hospital.
Christopher Alden Dawes remains in Payne County Jail facing the murder charge. He also is charged with domestic assault and battery by strangulation. The assault and battery charge stems from an attack that night on a 24-year old female, which court records indicate is his girlfriend.
He is being held without bail.
Dawes made a court appearance Wednesday where he received an application for court-appointed counsel. He is due back in Payne County District Court at 1:45 p.m. Friday.
Police were informed by the medical staff at OU Medical Center at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday that Sutherland died of his injuries an hour earlier.
Investigators filed an amended arrest affidavit with the Payne County District Attorney’s office which upgraded Dawes’ charges to first-degree murder. Dawes also was charged with domestic assault and battery by strangulation for the assault on the female victim.
First-degree murder is punishable by death, life in prison or life in prison without parole. The domestic assault and battery charge is punishable by not less than one year or more than three years in prison and/or a fine of $3,000.
