WONDERtorium builds on a great beginning

STILLWATER, Okla. — The staff of the Oklahoma WONDERtorium got more than it expected — especially in visitors — during its first year of operations which concluded in October.

“We had expected 13,500,” said Public Relations and Marketing Coordinator Lynda Halley. “That’s we budgeted for. We wanted to be very conservative in our budget. In 2012, we had 46,323 visitors.”

Visitors from 45 states and 59 of Oklahoma’s 77 counties have stopped in to see what the children’s museum has to offer.

Every day this summer was busy, Halley said, adding 2012 was a great year not only in attendance, but visibility and recognition. The organization was awarded the Not for Profit Business of the Year award at the Stillwater Chamber of Commerce annual meeting and awards banquet. Halley said the award was unexpected.

“It was just really an awesome surprise that we did win being as young as we are,” Halley said. “We were also awarded earlier in the year with the Frontier Marketing: “New Attraction of the Year” award.

This year will also mark the return of camps.

“We are coming up with our second year of summer camp and we have some favorites that we’re going to offer again,” she said.

There will also be exciting new topics, she said.

“Our summer camp program, in conjunction with the OSU College of Education, will appeal to children 8 to 12,” Halley said.

Early childhood camps will run at the same time for 5 to 7 year olds.
