Hospital Board of Trustees set to consider walking path, athletic fields at south campus

STILLWATER, Okla. — Rather than let acres of land go to waste, the Stillwater Medical Center Board of Trustees is in the early stages of planning to build a walking path and athletic fields for the public.

The project has not been approved, said hospital CEO Jerry Moeller. The Board of Trustees will review and possibly vote on the use of the south retention area of the 12th Avenue property at its meeting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the hospital’s Honska Conference Center, 1323 W. Sixth Ave.

The plan includes walking paths and several athletic fields for soccer and baseball.

“We’d like to think we promote healthy behaviors,” Moeller said of the project.

The land is located in a flood plain and not available for construction. The 30-acre plain was included in a 54-acre purchase for building a south campus for the hospital.

The hospital used the plain site to get dirt for construction on its campus building on the same acreage. The new facility will be located on the south side of west 12th Avenue between Blakely and Washington streets.

The campus will allow the hospital to consolidate offsite services and house the central business office, physician practice management, home health and accounting. It will also house the hospital’s sleep study service, freeing up space on the hospital’s third floor.

Moeller said the flood plain project is low cost and would benefit the community. He said the hospital would turn the area over to a Stillwater sports association or group if the fields and paths are approved and built.
