STILLWATER, Okla. —
A Cushing woman was arrested and released on $25,000 bail after being charged with two counts exploitation of an elderly person and two counts embezzlement.
Lorna Myers, 72, allegedly misused money from a trust fund account she was the financial accountant for, court records show.
The victim’s son noticed suspicious activity shortly after his mother died in 2009. He hired a third party accounting firm to examine the books pertaining to the trust fund. According to the accounting firm, Myers received about $350,350 in overpayment or embezzled money from the account.
Auditors noticed two companies were paid for a new roof on the victim’s house, Buck’s Roofing and Myers construction, owned by Myers. Myers told investigators Buck’s Roofing did a poor job and her son had to fix it. She stated she owns the company but her son runs the business and all the money went to him.
There were also numerous cash withdrawals listed for the victim’s son. The son said he never received any cash from Myers. Myers said she sent him cash in the mail on multiple occasions.
Myers attorney also said that she had borrowed about $40,000 from the victim and had paid it back in full with interest. Myers stated she owes about $91,400. She said she intends on paying this money back and considers it a loan, not a gift, according to the document.
