STILLWATER, Okla. —
After holding an unclaimed horse for more than a month the Payne County Sheriff’s Department sold it for $244 at an equine auction.
Sheriff’s department Capt. Kevin Woodward said found livestock is sold after deputies exhaust their ability to find the owner.
Deputies checked neighbors within a 4-mile radius with no luck and didn’t receive any calls regarding the animal.
The gelding was found wandering near West 19th Avenue and Battle Ridge Road by veterinarian Vicki Guilfoil in August. She estimated the horse was about six years old and in excellent health. She also did not receive any calls about the horse.
Most owners call the sheriff’s department when livestock comes up missing. The department also has a list of livestock owners.
