Stillwater Life Services set to hold annual Walk for Life Oct. 6

STILLWATER, Okla. — Stillwater Life Services is set to host it’s annual Walk for Life event at Boomer Lake Oct. 6 at 10 a.m.

Executive Director of Stillwater Life Services Nile Abele said Stillwater Life Services has been in Stillwater for 24 years. The walk began around 2001.

“It’s mostly an athletic event,” he said. “We realize that Saturdays are an important day for people so we don’t want to take the day up with a bunch of different activities.”

He said many participants have already been busy getting sponsors and preparing physically.

“They get registered online and they actually get their own personal fundraising page that they can then take and promote their walk or their run to people they know, family members, work associates, friends...,” he said.

He said the average sponsor donates $25 to $50 and the average walker or runner raises $250 to $300.

“We have a goal of raising $30,000,” he said. “Last year’s goal was $25,000 and we met that and just a little more than that. I believe it was $28,000.”

Abele said anyone is welcome to come out and participate, whether they chose to raise money or not.

“Boomer Lake is almost exactly a 5K once around and the walk we don’t do all the way around,” he said. “The walk ends up being about 2 miles.”

Check-in for the event take place at 9:30 a.m. at Shelter 2 at Boomer Lake.

“This year we’ve added the 5K fun run for the first time,” he said. “We’re actually hoping that next year we can make it an officially sanctioned 5K run.”

Money raised will go toward Stillwater Life Services. Stillwater Life Services is a crisis pregnancy and sexual health resource clinic, which provides STD/STI testing and treatment, pregnancy testing, options counseling and more.

“We welcome people to come out and join us to support life,” he said.

To register for the walk/fun run, visit www.slspartners.org or call 624-3332.

“I love the high energy stuff,” he said. “Even though it’s country, being able to rock it up, distorted guitars and just seeing the crowd, feeding off of that.”
