SLIDESHOW: 4th of July weekend begins with Boomer Blast

STILLWATER, Okla. — Boomer Blast weekend festivities kicked off Saturday with a wakeboarding and wakeskating contest.

Contestants ranging from children to grandparents with various skill levels competed in the Oklahoma Wake Series. The competition continues today.

Other activities at Boomer Lake Park include slip-and-slides, face painting, pony rides, train rides and more. Numerous food vendors are also on hand. Various other contests like watermelon eating also took place with plenty of prize giveaways.

Temperatures were in excess of 100 degrees, keeping the crowd small the whole day. Various red dirt bands will also perform throughout the weekend.

Today’s events conclude at dusk when the city’s fireworks show begins.

Trampas Parker, a motocross trainer from Okmulgee who took part in the 30-plus age group division, said he enjoyed the adrenaline rush he got from his wakeboard run.

“It’s a good family sport,” he said. “There’s nothing better than being able to bring the grandkids out.”

Parker learned to do frontflips by watching videos, he said, and then practicing on a trampoline. His wife, Sherri, also competed and won her division.

Their friend Kent Porske, who has been wakeboarding for 10 years, also competed in the same division. His passion for wakeboarding rubbed off from his friends, he said.

“Just that I can do it, it’s a lot of fun,” he said. “Just the fun of it, being out with friends.”

On Monday, a fishing tournament will also be held. Registration for the tournament will begin at 6 a.m.
