County commissioners approve property sales

STILLWATER, Okla. — Payne County commissioners approved Wednesday the sale of 16 parcels of county-owned land.

The properties, located in Cushing, the Cushing area or Yale, generated $523 for the county at a commissioners auction Feb. 20 at the Payne County Treasurer’s Office.

Twenty-one properties were available, but only 16 were sold to the highest bidder, Payne County Treasurer Bonita Stadler said. Three bidders attended the auction.

The owners failed to pay property taxes.

After a notification process and specific amount of time, Payne County became the property owners, Stadler said.

“The amount of money we collected is nothing to brag about,” she told commissioners. “The taxes that had accumulated over a period of four years was very small to tell you the truth.”

The property, Stadler said, was sold for two reasons.

• Return it to the tax rolls.

• Eliminate the county’s responsibilities for the properties.

The Payne County Excise Board must approve the sales at its  2 p.m. March 7 meeting because the properties were sold for less than the taxes owed, Stadler said.

“I feel sure they will probably agree that this is the right thing to do,” Stadler said.

The 21 properties were included in Payne County’s annual sale of delinquent properties in June, but didn’t sell, she said.

A person has submitted an individual bid on one of the five remaining properties, Stadler said.

The county commissioners will review and possibly act on that transaction Monday.
