Project Graduation offers safe environment for Stillwater students

STILLWATER, Okla. — A traditional event that offers fun and prizes for Stillwater High School graduates is set for May 24 from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. at the Oklahoma State University Colvin Center.

Project Graduation is an event featuring multiple activities, including rock wall climbing, karaoke, casino-style games, bingo, volleyball, basketball, dodgeball, inflatables and a photo booth.

Co-chair of Project Graduation 2013 Susan Dermer said the idea behind the evening is to provide an alternative.

“We hope to save at least one life and to prevent them from going out, drinking and driving or doing drugs,” she said. “We’re trying to provide safe alternatives for the kids.”

Graduates will have the chance to win prizes donated by local businesses.

“In the past, we’ve had dorm fridges, things that would be good for a student maybe moving out on their own,” she said. “We also have scholarships. I think the average one is anywhere from $250 up to $500.”

Texas Roadhouse and McAlister’s Deli will provide free food and drinks.

Dermer said it takes a lot of work to make the event possible.

“We try to recruit parents of juniors and sophomores so they know what takes place when they take over the following year,” Dermer said. “Right now, I would say our committee is around 25 parents.”

Stillwater High School senior Anthony Sorrentino said he is “super psyched” for Project Graduation.

“I think it’s a great idea because us seniors don’t have a lot of money and the fact that all these organizations donated to it is awesome,” he said.

“It’s also like a last chance get together for the class to say, ‘Hey, it’s been a fun year and goodbye,’” she said.

“We just want to provide that for them.”
