NEW: Red Cross opening shelter for Stillwater fire victims

STILLWATER, Okla. — The American Red Cross is opening an evacuation center at Stillwater's First United Methodist Church, Seventh and Duck, at 6 p.m. Monday for residents displaced by wildland fires roaring across Payne County in eastern Stillwater.

A Red Cross spokesman said evacuees should be prepared by grabbing medications and medical items, sanitation and personal hygiene items, copies of personal documents - medication list and pertinent medical information, deed/lease to home, birth certificates, insurance policies - cell phones with chargers, family and emergency contact information.

Two blazes plaguing firefighters and other emergency responders had burned at least five mobile homes and several other structures as it roared through acreages and timber.

The fires damaged power poles, destroyed homes and out buildings and forced evacuations.

“I love the high energy stuff,” he said. “Even though it’s country, being able to rock it up, distorted guitars and just seeing the crowd, feeding off of that.”
