NEW: Wildfire threatening Glencoe Saturday veers south; traffic plagues firefighters

GLENCOE, Okla. — A wildfire that roared through Payne County from north of Stillwater toward Glencoe Saturday changed course and prompted evacuations farther south along State Highway 108 Saturday night.

Heavy traffic in the area plagued firefighters and other emergency responders working to protect lives and property. Calls for traffic control went unanswered in some instances where humanpower was stretched thin.

Areas east of Stillwater and north to Glencoe were ordered evacuation. Several structures were reported destroyed.

The Payne County wildfires were only a few of many raging across the state. Fires prompted evacuation of Mannford and Drumright and areas south of Cushing.

The American Red Cross set up evacuation centers in Cushing and Pawnee.
