STILLWATER, Okla. —
Payne County commissioners approved an application for a federal grant concerning a section of Fairgrounds Road Monday.
The Surface Transportation Program Project, for Fairgrounds Road between State Highway 51 and East 68th Street, has an estimated cost of $1.4 million.
District 1 Commissioner Zach Cavett said federal funds top out at $1 million. Payne County would need to pay any remaining costs, he said.
The project is for road re-stabilization and new asphalt, Cavett said.
Cavett said the project could be started if funds were made available. However, he said he didn’t know if the grant would be approved. He said information from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation showed there have been personal injury accidents on Fairgrounds Road, but no fatality accidents. With no fatality accidents reported, it’s unlikely to get the federal funds, Cavett said.
According to the form, the application is for the federal fiscal year 2017. Commissioner Gloria Hesser said the application process can take years.
“It doesn’t move very fast,” Hesser said.
Cavett said he wanted to apply for the grant because “if you don’t apply you definitely won’t get it.”
