Cooks gear up for Elks Lodge Blazathon

STILLWATER, Okla. — Cooks gathered outside the Elks Lodge on Friday afternoon to begin setting up smokers and cooking equipment for the annual Blazathon.

The annual championship barbecue competition drew in cooks from all over Oklahoma, including Clinton Wood, who splits his time between Stillwater and Ardmore.

This was Wood’s first year to participate in the Blazathon. A friend at the Elks Lodge convinced him to enter the competition.

“I figured I might as well give it a shot,” Wood said. “It’s mostly just for fun.”

Wood and his cooking team, the Smoke Addicts, will be cooking brisket, ribs and chicken.

The team will also submit pork loin for the “Anything but” competition, which accepts all entries that aren’t included in one of the other four categories to be judged.

Wood said his team uses rubs on the meat rather than sauce.

Wood said he isn’t expecting to win but is still looking forward to the opportunity.

“If we win that’s great, but if not it’s more just to have a good weekend, sit out here and barbecue,” Wood said.

Community members are invited out Saturday to enjoy all the food. Money from ticket sales and other donations are given to Judith Karman Hospice.

“I think it’s great,” Wood said. “It’s always a good deal if money goes to a good purpose like that.”
