DEQ wants input on Cushing clean-up of refinery site

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Department of Environmental Quality is asking for public comment on a plan to clean up the old Empire Refinery site located about one mile northwest of downtown Cushing.

The refinery operated from 1913 through 1945 and the site covers 62 acres. DEQ first began assessing the property in 2004.

An investigation found soil, sediment and waste materials containing arsenic, chromium and petroleum hydrocarbons that could present a hazard to the environment and human health.

Water in a farm pond on the property won’t need treatment but other ponds might.

The comment period continues through May 5 but could be extended 30 days at public request.

If enough people express interest in a public meeting, one will be scheduled in Cushing.

Files related to the plan can be viewed at the Cushing Public Library and a copy of the site plan is available online at http://goo.gl/aBpjho.

For more information, contact Todd Downham at DEQ at 405-702-5136, or write to Downham, Department of Environmental Quality, P.O. Box 1677, Oklahoma City, OK, 73101-1677.
