Oklahoma State students partner with children’s museum to construct mock city

STILLWATER, Okla. — A Stillwater children’s museum is partnering with students from the Oklahoma State University School of Architecture to construct a mock city.

Programs Coordinator Debbie Williams called the event ASTEK.

“This is a program that is implemented by OSU architecture students and ASTEK stands for Architecture Students Teaching Elementary Kids,” she said. “It’s six sessions. We’re going to do two sessions in January, two in February, two in March and a culminating event where the students will build a box city.”

Williams said the students will use the tools and concepts learned during the six sessions.

“Some of those things that they’ll be doing is learning how to sketch, they’ll learn how to scale, perspective,” Williams said.

The OSU students will bring all their supplies. The program is open to ages 9 to 11. Williams said the program has been occurring in fifth-grade classrooms around Stillwater for teachers who wished to implement it.

“Even if kids had participated in their classroom and enjoyed it, this would be a great venue to continue to develop those skills and learn more about architecture,” she said.

Williams said the program is a hit with architecture students who have a good time mentoring children.

“It’s a real win-win situation for all of us,” Williams said.

The children will create a building that will be part of a city. The finished city will be on display at the WONDERtorium following the program.

The program is $35 for members of the WONDERtorium and $50 for non-members.

“I think that one of the pushes in education now is the STEM, the science, technology, engineering and mathematics push ... and this is just a really wonderful way to help children develop those skills in a really fun interactive way,” she said.
