Commissioners to consider emergency declaration for Lone Chimney Lake

STILLWATER, Okla. — Lone Chimney Lake north of Glencoe could run out of water in one and a half months, said District 2 County Commissioner Chris Reding.

Payne County commissioners will consider a possible emergency declaration for water supply needs for the Lone Chimney Water Association at its 9 a.m. Monday meeting at the County Administration Building, 315 W. Sixth Ave.

The lake has been losing water because of the drought. The lake provides water for approximately 16,000 residents, said J.J. Dooley, Lone Chimney Water Association water treatment plant supervisor.

Lone Chimney Water Association Chairman Darrel Clark said the lake provides water to Pawnee, Morrison, Glencoe, Yale, Agra, Terlton and several rural water districts.

The water association received a $3.355 million loan from the Oklahoma Water Resources Board in September to build a 12-mile pipeline from the lake to the Stillwater water treatment plant.

In June, the Stillwater Utilities Authority and the Lone Chimney Water Association signed a 30-year contract that allows the association to purchase at least 2 million gallons a month. The association will pay at least $85,000 annually to Stillwater for water.

Payne County Emergency Management Director Jeff Kuhn said one mile of the pipeline had been completed. The expected completion date for the pipeline is July or August.

Declaring a state of emergency would bring the lake to the attention of Gov. Mary Fallin, Kuhn said.

Kuhn said the water level has decreased a foot since the last meeting of the water association.

“They’re trying to make it last,” Kuhn said.
