Relay for Life of Stillwater kicks off Tuesday

STILLWATER, Okla. — Relay For Life of Stillwater is kicking off 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. Anyone interested in forming a team or finding out more information is invited to the meeting, said Seana Ogle, executive team member and a cancer survivor.

The Stillwater American Cancer Society Relay For Life is scheduled for Aug. 9 at the Payne County Expo Center. Activities will begin at 7 p.m. continuing all night through the morning of Aug. 10. Teams walk all night long, with survivors treated to a dinner and recognized with a survivor lap during opening ceremonies. Ogle said you do not have to be on a team to participate in activities, which include a silent auction. At the relay, you can find healing, comfort and support from others who have faced cancer or who have lost a loved one to the disease. You have a chance to meet people in the community who are as passionate about finding an end to cancer in our lifetime.

“The event is the cancer society’s signature fundraising event with Stillwater’s group donating $149,000 last year,” Ogle said.  “Relay For Life of Stillwater was named one of the top three events in Oklahoma last year.”

More than 28 teams involving 400 people were part of the program. This year’s fundraising goal is $154,000. Stillwater is also in a pilot study for a cancer prevention program and those interested can find out more information from Relay For Life.
