Double overtime spells trouble for Oklahoma State

Cowboys fall 68-67 to the Kansas Jayhawks

STILLWATER, Okla. — The sellout crowd inside Gallagher-Iba Arena got its money worth Wednesday night with Oklahoma State hosting Kansas.

With the two teams battling to stand tied atop the Big 12 Conference standings, the game went to double overtime where the visiting Jayhawks squeaked out a 68-67 victory to avenge an earlier loss to OSU in Lawrence, Kan.

“It’s a huge win for conference implications,” said Kansas coach Bill Self, a former Oklahoma State basketball player. “I really thought Oklahoma State had the best path coming in ... but now, we probably still have the toughest road to go of anybody, but we’re still in the game and this was huge today.”

Self, who played and was an assistant coach at OSU, said seeing a packed and rowdy Gallagher-Iba Arena brought back memories.

“The crowd was great. It was awesome. It brought back good memories of being here when this place was rocking and it was certainly rocking tonight,” Self said. “Couldn’t communicate, couldn’t really hear and our guys played timid, very timid in the first half.”

While the loss is a bitter pill to swallow for the Cowboy players, they had a message for the fans that may have gone home disappointed by the defeat.

“It was disappointing, but I just hope they stand behind us,” OSU junior Markel Brown said. “It was a great crowd out there tonight and I hope they had fun even though it didn’t go our way. I hope that they see that this team is ready to win and come out and support us.”
