STILLWATER, Okla. — Payne County Expo Center representatives are hoping to not only be approved for needed repairs, but the purchase of a used outdoor rodeo arena at the Payne County Commission meeting 9 a.m. Monday at the Payne County Administration Building, 315 W. Sixth Ave.

Payne County Expo Center Marketing Director Calvin Oyster said the used arena would have dimensions of 180 feet by 280 feet with additional return pens and accessory equipment.

“We would be able to more adequately accomodate some events like barrel racing, team penning, ropings and smaller rodeo events and have an outdoor arena that is safe and adequate for some of the other horse events that we have,” he said. “It would help us attract new events.”

Those new events could include motocross and tractor pulls, he said.

“All we have out there now is a wire pen with some old rotted out railroad-type posts,” Oyster said. “We don’t have anything like this.”

He said the approval for the purchase would hopefully attract more visitors to the events.

The Expo Center also seeks approval for repairs to lower exterior portions on three sides of the McVey Arena Building. The repairs include cutting rusted metal off the building up to three feet off the ground and replacing it with a new section of sheet metal. Oyster said he estimates the repair to be approximately $10,000 to $15,000.
