VIDEO: Bowling can make a big difference in a child's life

STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State University athletic events often hold a special significance for alum Scott Linderer.

Sure, he enjoys watching the OSU football, basketball or baseball teams win. Some games are special because they help him bond with a Stillwater youth.

Linderer has been a Big Brother to the same boy since 2008. He has seen his “little” come out of his shell, and helped the 11-year-old boy stay out of trouble.

“I just jumped in with both feet and kind of hoped for the best. The Big Brothers Big Sisters staff was amazing,” Linderer told a group of Big Brother Big Sister supporters Thursday at the launch of Stillwater’s Bowl for Kid Sake fundraiser.

The staff matches bigs and littles who have similar interest which helps them enjoy activities together, he said.

“The staff provides a lot of activities to do,” Linderer said. “There was a baseball game and a softball game where all the bigs and littles went to it together. ... At the (fundraising) auction, my little was really excited because he got to meet Travis Ford, coach Holliday and also got to meet Nick (Wheeler) from All-American Rejects.”

It doesn’t require a large time commitment, perhaps an hour or two a week, to make a large difference in a child’s life, Linderer said.

Bowl for Kids Sake is Big Brothers Big Sisters Oklahoma largest fundraiser every year, said Renee Meek, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma director of individiual giving.

The statewide goal is $716,000, she said. Stillwater’s goal is $30,000.

The fundraising event revolves around bowling. Businesses or individuals get together to form five-member teams. Each team member seeks at least $100 in pledges, Meek said.
