STILLWATER, Okla. — The Payne County Expo Center has decided to “Cowboy Up” with a new rodeo arena.

At the Payne County Commission meeting Monday, the board listened to a proposal and decided to seek bids to move a used rodeo arena. The used rodeo arena Payne County plans to purchase and move is off Interstate 35 around the Perry exit. Even though the arena is not new, it would be a new addition for the Payne County Expo Center.

The move would not start until after the Payne County Fair, which is Aug. 26 through Aug. 31, said Michael Benson, Payne County Expo Center manager.

Benson said the rodeo arena has a lot of potential and would be a beneficial to the area.

The Oklahoma State University rodeo team has expressed interest in the arena, Benson said. The OSU rodeo team told Benson if a rodeo arena was built, the team would like to have a few events a year there, Benson said.

District 1 Commissioner Zach Cavett said there needs to be a place in Stillwater to hold a few rodeos because Perry, Pawnee and a few other surrounding areas have “good” rodeos. Cavett said it was a great investment for the fairgrounds. District 3 Commissioner Jim Arthur also said he thought the rodeo arena would be a great addition to the area because Perkins has a successful rodeo.
