Summer program on final chapter

The final leg of “Summer @ Your Library” begins next week!

We kick off July 22, with a magical performances by Kevin Wade at 10 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Kevin’s program will be just a little different this year because he’ll not only be showing kids magic, but also how magic is all based on science. He’ll demonstrate chemistry, magnetism, optics, physics and mathematics through his tricks. I love the crafty ways our performers have managed to sneak in learning each week.

On July 23, children’s reading logs are due by noon and teen reading cards are due before the start of their final program. Anyone who wants a chance at a great prize needs to turn in those reading hours!

The teen finale at 2 p.m. July 23 will include pizza and a huge variety of desserts made by all the librarians (remember – we librarians have easy access to a jillion tasty dessert books, so I reckon they’ll be pretty good!). We’ll also have a cool robotics demonstration, and of course, we’ll end with the long-awaited drawing for the iPad Minis.

There is one more thing for the teens to get excited about - Emily, the young adult librarian, has promised teens if they read 10,000 hours by this Wednesday (June 16) at 9 p.m., she will show up at the finale with whatever crazy hair color one lucky participant chooses. So for all of our sakes, please get those cards turned in!!

The children’s program celebrates its readers on July 24 with award ceremonies at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Invitations to children who read 10 hours or more will be sent via email.

Miss Elizabeth, the children’s librarian, isn’t planning to dye her hair, but kids will be treated to a special bonus performance by fantastical string master David Titus. Also, the children’s grand prize drawings will take place the same day, awarding a few lucky, literary kids some amazing prizes.

So in conclusion: magic, science, reading cards, pizza, crazy hair, more reading cards, iPad Minis, string, reading cards again and prizes. A great week indeed! (And I should probably mention one more time to bring in those reading logs and cards!)
