Perkins church burns day before Easter

PERKINS, Okla. — Lightning is blamed for a fire that spread through the sanctuary of Immanuel Baptist Church, 2415 E. 104th St. in Perkins, Saturday morning - the day before the congregation planned to meet for Easter services.

The building was engulfed when Perkins firefighters arrived shortly after getting a call at 6:30 a.m., Fire Chief Joe Barta said. Stillwater and Ingalls firefighters helped battle the blaze.

“Most of the roof had already come down,” Barta said.

Neighbors told Barta and congregation members the building was struck by lightning during a thunderstorm that moved through the area.

The sanctuary is destroyed, but a firewall stopped the flames from crossing into the education wing of the church, ministry assistant Claudia Andrews said.

The congregation will meet Sunday at Oak Park Retreat Center at 805 E. Kirk St. in Perkins. They will meet at 10:45 a.m. for worship only.
