Ride goes on even in rain
Rain or shine, 245 cyclists came to Stillwater for the Tour of Payne bike ride Saturday.
Cooper Bicycle Center owner Mary Cash said the cyclers had a little trouble with the slick roads, but most of the riders were glad to have some relief from the hot weather.
“Some of the riders complained but most of the riders didn’t really complain because it did make it cooler,” Cash said. “It did drop attendance because if you wake up in the morning and it’s raining, you don’t come.”
Riders started out at Stillwater Junior High at 7:30 a.m. and could ride 20 miles, 38 miles, 64 miles or 105 miles through the major cities of Payne County. Cash said this event is the major fundraiser for Red Dirt Pedalers, with $1,000 going to the Operation Christmas program to purchase bikes for kids.
Along the trail, Red Dirt Pedalers offers rest stops so riders can take a break and replenish their bodies.
“They’ve got good food, water, fruit and even some home baked goodies,” said Donald Friesen, Wichita, Kan.
He has been participating in Tour of Payne for five years, and this year he rode 68 miles. He said he enjoys coming to Stillwater and eating at Eskimo Joe’s.
“The day went good, and I am thankful I finished,” he said.
Brandt Brock, Tulsa, rode as part of his training for an upcoming event. He had never done a 100-mile ride before, he said, and thought this ride would be good practice for his later ride.
“It wasn’t warm because of all the rain, which was good,” he said. “It was pretty dirty and mucky, but it was cool. There were times when the rain came down harder, I saw a couple people fall and that sort of thing.”
He said he was satisfied to finish his first 100-mile ride, which he did in a little more than six hours. Most of his ride was spent with his head down for the rain, he added, but he enjoyed the ride.
