City of Stillwater replacing 33 fire hydrants, 26 valves

STILLWATER, Okla. — The City of Stillwater is replacing 33 fire hydrants and 26 main line valves across the city, said Anthony Daniel, water utilities director.

Daniel said many of the hydrants would require engineered parts to repair, as some are 50 years old and replacement parts can no longer be found.

The project started in mid-September and is expected to be completed by the end of December, Daniel said.

The city has contracted Orion Construction Services Corp. of Woodward to replace the hydrants and values, said project manager Jamie Portell.

He said new valves will improve water pressure throughout the city.

Portell said most of the hydrants being replaced are downtown, but some are closer to Oklahoma State University, one is close to 5th Avenue and Lowry Street and another is by Mission of Hope on Perkins Road.

The city’s website stated fire hydrants will be replaced in areas between 7th and 15th Avenues from Hester Street to Perkins Road. Water valves will be replaced near Perkins Road and Thomas Drive; Canyon Rim, Sunrise and Skyline areas and the area from 3rd Avenue and West Street to 9th Avenue and Lowry Street.

Portell’s crew last replaced a hydrant at 8th Avenue and Husband Street.

Portell said Orion has finished installing 19 of the hydrants. The hydrants they dig up are sometimes from the 1940s or earlier. He said they found a buried hydrant dated 1896.

Orion has replaced a 16-inch valve at 4th Avenue and Ramsey and two 6-inch valves at 5th Avenue and Lowry.

Orion will deliver water service interruption notices on Fridays for work to be completed the following week.
