STILLWATER, Okla. — Payne county firefighters will have more money for equipment and training next year thanks to a new sales tax passed by residents.
The proposition passed with a final but unofficial 72.5 percent for and 27.5 percent against.
The 1/16 cent sales tax will begin April 1 and will continue for the next five years. At that time it will be voted on again.
Officials estimate the tax to yeild $610,000 each year to be divided evenly among area fire departments, including Cushing Glencoe, Perkins, Stillwater and Yale.
Yale Fire Chief Josh Robinson was excited about the new funds that will be available to purchase new equipment.
“I appreciate the voters supporting the county fire departments and I look forward to the opportunities that this sales tax will provide,” Robinson said.
