Gundy says J.W. Walsh out for the season

STILLWATER, Okla. — Mike Gundy revealed Oklahoma State quarterback J.W. Walsh, who has started the last three games for OSU, is out for the season with a knee injury sustained in the first quarter of Saturday's win over Iowa State.

In the first quarter, Walsh appeared to be limping after being sacked by the Cyclones. He stayed in the game and threw for a career-high 415 yards and rushed for 46 yards and a score.

It's the second leg injury that has fallen upon the OSU quarterback corps. Season starter Wes Lunt injured his left knee/ankle during the first drive of the Louisiana-Lafayette game on Sept. 15.

Walsh had met with the media following Saturday's game and showed no effects from the hit or the game.

Now OSU coaches, which had mentioned a lack of pressure to have Lunt return because the success of Walsh, may have to speed up the return of the true freshman Lunt. Gundy had said after the past two games that Lunt could have played if needed.

Lunt will now be needed with TCU coming into Boone Pickens Stadium Saturday. If Lunt were to start against the Horned Frogs, Enid's Clint Chelf would become the backup while former walk-on Jase Chilcoat would return to the third spot on the depth chart.

Gundy and members of the Cowboy roster are set to meet with the media Monday for the team's weekly press conference to preview the week's contest. As for Walsh, his first year ends with him completing 66.2 percent of his passes for a total of 1,467 yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions.

“I love the high energy stuff,” he said. “Even though it’s country, being able to rock it up, distorted guitars and just seeing the crowd, feeding off of that.”
