City schedules two grant forums

STILLWATER, Okla. — The city of Stillwater is seeking public input on how to allocate federal funding it should receive for the benefit of persons of low to moderate incomes.

According to Grants Coordinator Valerie Silvers, the 2013 Community Development Block Grant Small Cities Set Aside Program, funded through the Oklahoma Department of Commerce by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, has set aside $97,500 for the city of Stillwater.

As part of the application process, city staff will hold two public input meetings to find out what kind of projects citizens want to see funded. The meetings will be held 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday. Both will be held at the Stillwater Community Center, 315 W. 8th Ave. The final public hearing and council selection will be held at the April 1 Stillwater City Council.

Silvers said the primary national objective of the CDBG Program is to develop communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment, particularly for persons of low to moderate incomes.

“Over the years in Stillwater, the CDBG Program has funded street and sidewalk construction, tree trimming and removal, replacement and installation of water and sewer lines, building demolition and drainage channel cleanup,” Silvers said.

The city of Stillwater encourages participation in the application process for the 2013 CDBG program. In addition to the two public meetings, residents may pick up a form and drop it off at the Police and Municipal Building, 723 S. Lewis St., or email vsilvers@stillwater.org.

“Projects and activities that CDBG can fund are construction, repair type projects. They must require bricks, mortar, tools, etc. Soft services such as a receptionist at a food pantry are not an eligible project,” said Silvers.

“Ultimately, the Stillwater City Council will decide which projects will be funded. However, we need your comments, ideas and input, so council can make the best decision possible. If you can’t attend either meeting, please call or email me with your ideas by March 22,” Silvers said.
