STILLWATER, Okla. —
A mental health center with locations in seven counties throughout north central Oklahoma, including Payne County, is asking Oklahomans to hold house party fundraising events.
Edwin Fair Community Mental Health Center’s Director of Children’s Services Gary Wilburn said the fundraising events will help support the center’s goal of recovery and services in mental health.
“It’s an opportunity to raise awareness for the community and an opportunity to help people with recovery through Edwin Fair,” Wilburn said.
Edwin Fair has been “providing service to activate mental health recovery in children, adolescents and adults since 1958,” according to a release.
“This is the first time that we have attempted this and we’ve always tried to have events or means of getting information out to the public about mental wellness,” he said.
Wilburn said the house parties, to be held on Oct. 10, are for any group that would like to learn more about mental health and make it a fun evening.
“The biggest thing is that its connected with World Mental Health Day and so just really awareness,” Wilburn said. Wilburn said those interested can visit the nearest Edwin Fair office to pick up a registration packet. A press release for the event said the kit contains “house party theme ideas and a party planning checklist.” He said while donations are open ended, they are asking for a $10 contribution per participant.
“This money will go to help Edwin Fair reach the community further in the sense of educational programs for both kids and adults whether it be in the schools or in the community setting,” he said.
He said mental health is a difficult social issue for many.
“I think one of the things is that mental health issues, if they don’t affect us personally, they affect someone we know,” he said. “It does affect all of us in some manner.”
Those interested in participating are asked to register by Sept. 26.
