STILLWATER, Okla. —
Team Claire keeps running for the cure.
The 3rd annual American Cancer Society Team Claire Relay through Payne County will be Saturday and the event helps raise money for the American Cancer Society.
Team Claire raises money for a 15-year-old girl named Claire Leffingwell. Leffingwell has been a cancer survivor for approximately 12 years and she is the inspiration of the event and the runners, according to a Team Claire press release.
Leffingwell was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, which is a bone cancer, shortly before she turned 3. Today, Leffingwell is healthy and is strongly active in school, Girl Scouts, her church and playing the piano, according to the press release.
“She bravely endured more than a dozen surgeries, more than 120 days of hospitalization and a year of chemotherapy,” according to the press release.
The Payne County Team Claire event is one of many events throughout the year for Team Claire and the program has collected approximately $100,000 throughout the last 12 years, which most of these earnings have come from donations.
It is estimated approximately 25 runners from Stillwater, Cushing and Perkins will hit the roads in Payne County Saturday for Team Claire. The runners will run a loop around Payne County and the run will begin at 4:30 a.m.
The runners will start at the First Presbyterian Church in Stillwater and will finish where it started approximately 11 hours later. Each runner will run between one mile to 13 miles and will run through Stillwater, Cushing and Perkins. The runners combined are estimated to cover between 55 to 60 miles.
If an individual is interested in becoming a sponsor, he or she can donate $100 and become a sponsor of the event. If a company or organization is interested in becoming a sponsor, it must donate $200.
