STILLWATER, Okla. —
If your ticket to today’s OSU football game says general admission, don’t plan on sitting in the first row on the 50-yard line because those seats are already spoken for.
If you are reading this article at your breakfast table, that means you weren’t already in line on Thursday like a dedicated band of Cowboy fans.
Koby Johnson, Chad Wills and Garrett Garner pitched their tent outside Boone Pickens Stadium at 4 p.m. Thursday. The three OSU students managed to set up their things just before a sudden rain and wind storm blew their tent around.
“I’ve been looking forward to football season ever since the last game of last year,” Johnson said.
Fans who camp out are allowed entry to the stadium an hour-and-a-half early and get first dibs on the general admission seats. Up to 10 fans are allowed in per tent, and group members usually take turns at their tent. Most tents include air mattresses, food and water, but some overachievers brought box fans or even an Xbox.
“We were hoping they would already have the Porta-Potties set up,” Wills said.
The three students exchanged rumors of which nearby buildings might have an unlocked bathroom.
Wills said he has made a tradition of camping out for OSU football and basketball games and plans on making it to every game this year.
“It’s definitely better sitting in the front row,” he said.
Another OSU student, Victor Kamesar, agreed.
“It absolutely makes it that much more of an experience sitting in the first couple of rows,” he said. “The anticipation of waiting heightens the whole thing.”
Kamesar was killing time on his shift at a tent by drawing up plays on a white board to help explain the game to a member of his group who grew up in Europe.
He was camped out for every OSU football game last year and doesn’t plan on missing any this year even if the team should lose a few games.
“We’re Cowboy fans through thick and thin,” Kamesar said.
Jessica Waters and Danielle Brown tried to finish some homework while they were taking their shift outside their tent but had given up. Their tent was a part of a group that had also set up Thursday afternoon.
“It is so much better sitting so close to the action,” Waters said.
Brown and Waters have camped out many times and said that before some games coaches or players will come out to bring pizzas or talk with the dedicated campers.
Brown said she loves sitting so close to the players.
“Especially when they jump into the stands and you can touch them,” she added with a laugh.
