Board of Regents to consider OSU’s requests to employ architects, managers

STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State University will seek approval of architects, engineering consultants and construction managers on numerous building projects Friday when the Board of Regents for the Oklahoma Agricultural & Mechanical Colleges meet at the Noble Conference Center in Ardmore.

OSU will ask regents to approve the hiring of an architect to assist in the design and construction of a new residence hall that will take the place of the aging Kerr-Drummond Hall.

Carrie Hulsey-Greene, associate director of communications at OSU, said the proposed residence hall that will be located on the northwest side of campus would feature 800 to 900 beds and help compensate for the loss of the 1,100-bed Kerr-Drummond Hall.

Kerr-Drummond was built in the early 1960s.

The Regents also are expected to act on OSU’s appeal to hire an engineering consultant and construction manager for a new track and field facility.

The track and field facility is part of the OSU athletic department’s $35 million plan for an Athletic Village north of Boone Pickens Stadium.

The proposed track and field facility would take the place of Kaye Barrett Droke Track and Field Center, which was built in 1972 and last updated in 1986.

The university also is seeking approval of an on-call construction manager for the Math Learning Success Center on the fifth floor of the Edmon Low Library.

The math center is using a learning resource center on the fourth floor of the classroom building.

Hulsey-Greene said space in the classroom building has become too small for the number of students using it.

Hulsey-Greene said the project is budgeted at $1.6 million, which would include $450,000 for a fire suppression system and $250,000 for asbestos abatement.

The university also will look for approval to hire an architect and construction manager for a new academic building for OSU-Tulsa and the OSU Center for Health Sciences.

“I love the high energy stuff,” he said. “Even though it’s country, being able to rock it up, distorted guitars and just seeing the crowd, feeding off of that.”
