Grants coordinator brings passion to work and life

STILLWATER, Okla. — Her personality makes her good at her job, and a person will rarely see her taking it easy. As she said, she doesn’t sit around much.

Valerie Silvers is the city of Stillwater’s grant coordinator and has been since 2009. In her office, one can see numerous pictures of her children, but the top of her desk is hidden by paperwork.

It is common for Silvers to keep track of more than five active grants at any one particular time, she said. The fast-paced environment of grants fits her personality well.

“I’m just really kind of a thrill seeker,” Silvers said.

Silvers received her marketing degree from Oklahoma State University, and she said grants have always been fun for her. She said she is always on the go at work, but working hard is fun, too.

Silvers is always on the go at work, but that doesn’t change much in her off hours. She said she loves anything active.

Grants can be a competitive business and Silvers said it helps her enjoy her job, and gives her an edge in the work environment.

“When you enjoy your job, you do good work,” Silvers said. “I really love my job. That’s for sure.”

Winning a grant award is the ultimate victory for a grant coordinator, Silvers said. She has seen many grants come through while working in Stillwater for more than 20 years, but one recent grant probably is her finest moment.

“This most recent grant was a proud moment,” Silvers said. “It was a huge grant and it effected so many people in the city.”

That grant is the storm shelters grant worth $1.4 million. This grant helped fund construction of storm shelters in 709 households in Stillwater.

Silvers said when grants impact a community like the storm shelter grant it makes her job special.
