Benefit auction set for Thursday

STILLWATER, Okla. — Seeing boots and bandanas is nothing unusual in Stillwater. But boots, bandanas, barbecue and an auction of desserts made by local “celebrity chefs” is quite another sight altogether.

“That’d be our annual fundraising event for Central Oklahoma Community Action Agency. We hold this barbecue dinner and dessert auction to raise funds for the Mission of Hope, Community Health Center and Family Support Services,” said Debbie Traugott, director of the community health center.

“This is our 12th year of being able to provide physical, emotional and medical help to those in Payne County who need it most.”

This year’s event is at Meditations on Country Club Road in Stillwater on Thursday. The dinner begins at 7 p.m. with the auction immediately following. Guests bid on desserts crafted by many notable local “celebrities” such as Marge McMillian, Ann Halligan, Kristen Gundy and Nancy Patton. Special items such as a gourmet French dinner for six, sideline passes to an Oklahoma State football game and a spring break getaway at the Love Ridge Lodge in Jackson Hole, Wyo., also are included in the auction.

This event regularly raises between $15,000 and $20,000 through the sale of dinner tickets and money raised on auction items.

Auctioneer Charlie Kaupke said the event is a fun way to help people and give hope to those in need.
