Up and away 5K and fun run benefit adoptions

STILLWATER, Okla. — It’s a bird . . . it’s a plane . . . it’s Superman won’t be a mirage next Saturday morning at a 5K and 1-mile fun run at Boomer Lake.

The Alsup family is hosting the event to raise money and awareness for adoptions.  Participants are encouraged to wear superheroe attire. Anyone can register for the race at

The cost is $30 and children 12 and under are free. The action starts at 9 a.m. near the pavilion closet to the west side playground by the Boomer Lake deck.

“You can run, walk or bike,” said Sara Alsup.

The family will be assisted by Felicia Holland, a cousin of the Alsup family. The Oklahoma State University chapter of Chi Omega is lending support, too.

Sara and Bobby Alsup have two children, Marli, 5, and Miles, 2.  Bobby teaches at Cushing High School and Sara operates a licensed home day care.

The Bible verse “learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause” from Isaiah 1:17 inspired the Alsup family to adopt a child from Africa.

“We started out looking to add to our family, but it soon grew into more than that,” Sara said.  “There are so many orphans out there, and many don’t even live past age 5. In James 1:27, James talks about true religion is caring for widows and orphans. Later in chapter 4, he writes that if you know what you should do but don’t, it is sin. We see this as an opportunity to serve others.”

Donations will also be accepted at the race or at
