Oklahoma State theater seeks truth with 'Galileo'

STILLWATER, Okla. — The truth, and having the conviction to stand by that truth, is one of the central themes in “Galileo,” an Oklahoma State University Theater Department production which begins a five-performance run Tuesday night at the Seretean Center for the Performing Arts.

The play will run Tuesday through Sunday in the Vivia Locke Theatre. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets can be purchased at the box office before the performance. For ticket information or to buy tickets, contact the OSU box office at 405-744-6094.

Galileo is about the 16th-century astronomer and mathematician whose scientific discoveries collided with prevailing ideas about the universe. Galileo struggled to convince fellow astronomers, church leaders and the world that the Earth revolved around the sun, not the other way around.

“The theme of this play is letting the truth be known” said OSU theater professor Peter Westerhoff, who is directing the play. “There is a lot of intellectual conversations in this. It’s not a play that’s music and comedy and dancing girls. It’s really about a stimulated conversation about the truth and the courage it takes to get the truth out there.”

The play was written by German playwright and stage director Breholt Brecht in the 1930s. Westerhoff said Brecht wrote the play as a parallel response to the rise of Nazism in Germany.

“It’s not a biography,” said James Knowlton, a senior from Owasso who plays Andrea Sarti, one of Galileo’s assistants. “But it’s based on real events. This play is really about the theme of the struggle between reason and tradition.”
