STILLWATER, Okla. —
Whirligigs from dragons to canoes are rippling in the wind at The Botanical Garden at Oklahoma State University as part of the “Whirligigs and Such” art exhibit.
“Whirligigs and similar wind toys have long been a part of what is referred to as folk art,” said Sallie McCorkle, an Oklahoma State University art department professor. “Here, our students have explored the mechanical aspects of wind-enhanced movement while bringing their unique designs to this entertaining art form.”
Students in McCorkle's 3-D Design Foundation class installed the projects Wednesday. The original whirligigs are primarily made of wood and move via some version of a pivot and a propeller.
“It’s a terrific opportunity for our students to get out of the classroom and into a public environment to see their art on display,” McCorkle said.
The Oklahoma Botanical Garden & Arboretum is located at 3300 W. Sixth. Laura Payne, the volunteer coordinator, said visitors are welcome dawn to dusk. “This 3-D installation complements our theme this year of Art in the Garden,” she said
The whirligigs will be on display until Dec. 12.
