STILLWATER, Okla. —
Stillwater Performing Arts Center will resound with poetry on Thursday as Stillwater High School hosts the sixth annual Poetry Out Loud competition.
The public is welcome to attend the free event, which begins at 9:30 a.m.
Competing will be Stillwater High School students Corian Zacher, Kamakshi Vaidyanathan, Olivia Fletcher, Rapha Ngassa, Christy Kelly, Paige Nelson, Alex Garoffolo, Libby Wuller and Joe Lee. The students won their classroom level competition to advance to the schoolwide event.
Judges will be Renae Perry, Lisa Tabish, Kirsten Judah, Amy Frank, Jennifer White and Karla Driskill.
Contestants will be judged on physical presence, voice and articulation, dramatic appropriateness, level of difficulty, evidence of understanding and overall performance.
The winner advances to the state competition. The state champion advances to the national finals in April.
State winners receive $200 and an all-expense paid trip with an adult chaperone to Washington, D.C., to compete in the national finals.
A total of $50,000 in scholarships and school stipends will be awarded at the national finals.
The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation have partnered with state art agencies to support Poetry Out Loud, a contest that encourages students to learn about poetry through memorization and recitation.
