STILLWATER, Okla. —
Stillwater City councilors will consider a resolution to approve a traffic signal at 1188 N. Perkins for the entrance to a grocery store.
The City Council will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Municipal Building, 723 S. Lewis.
ALDI will pay 100 percent of the construction costs for the installation of the traffic light, according to the resolution.
Because Perkins Road is also State Highway 177, the city of Stillwater would participate with Oklahoma Department of Transportation to install the traffic signal.
After ALDI officials had picked a location, company officials realized increased traffic to their store would add to traffic on Perkins Road. They asked city staff if a turn lane could be added to Perkins Road and a traffic signal installed.
The city didn’t have money in the budget to install the light, so ALDI representatives agreed to pay for the traffic signal.
The city entered into an agreement Dec. 3 with the chain to repay construction costs for the traffic signal over a seven-year period.
The Stillwater Economic Development Authority agreed to a 1 percent tax break for up to $300,000 for the seven-year period.
ALDI is a discount grocery store chain which has more than 1,000 locations in 31 states. It has 13 stores in Oklahoma. The division office for Texas and Oklahoma is in Denton, Texas.
